<p>Stretching is simple to do (you can even stretch while sitting) and can make remarkable strides in improving your joints and muscles. You can find online stretching exercises, choose from the many television shows that promote exercising or get a book from the library or bookstore. You’ll want to be sure to choose exercises that stretch your back, arms, calves, thighs, stomach and chest – but don’t overdo it. <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Stretch for 5 to 20 minutes per day</span> or whatever you feel up to.</p>
<p>Any activity that increases your endurance is great for senior citizens. Those exercises might include gardening, biking, swimming or simply walking the dog. Try to <strong>increase your breathing and heart rate</strong>, but don’t exercise so strenuously that you lose your ability to talk. Take it easy and you’ll benefit more than you realize.</p>
<p>Strength exercises are very important to engage in as you age. The more you can strengthen your muscles, the better able you’ll be to increase your metabolism (<a href="http://www.healthandwellness.truebluetips.com/weight-loss.html" target="_blank">maintain a normal weight</a>) and keep your blood sugar at normal levels. Strength exercises can be in the form of machines at a gym or fitness center – or, you can even use items around the house, such as books and cans of food.</p>

Ask your doctor for a list of exercises you can do to strengthen back muscles or research on your own to find some that are right for you.</p>

There are exercises to specifically <strong>build your leg muscles</strong> and increase your perception of balance so that you’re less likely to fall. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As we age, we may experience some problems that affect the body and mind, including a <strong>change in our sensory perceptions</strong>. Our sense of smell may affect how we eat, enjoy food and drink and also affect the type of nutrients we put in our bodies. Depending on how severe the loss of smell is, it could actually be dangerous if it means we don’t smell hazardous chemicals, gas leaks and smoke.</p>
<p>Our sense of taste is also affected by our sense of smell. If you eat something while holding your nose, you might taste salt, bitterness or sweetness, but you won’t taste the robust flavor of what you’re eating. The sensory perception that affects our sense of smell is call olfaction and this is what weakens when you age.</p>
<p>The fact that <span style="text-decoration: underline;">you lose sense of taste as you lose sense of smell</span> is especially problematic for seniors. It could result in lack of appetite or of eating foods that aren’t good for you just to try and taste them. Think about how fresh bread baking makes your salivate and then think about how it would be if you couldn’t smell it. Your enthusiasm for eating would certainly wane.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.healthandwellness.truebluetips.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/cl44-1.jpg"><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-1081" title="Sense of Smell" src="http://www.healthandwellness.truebluetips.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/cl44-1-150x150.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="150" /></a>Anyone who needs to control his or her diet may be greatly affected by sense of smell. If the olfactory system quits working or weakens, it’s more difficult to control and stick to a nutritious diet plan and a greater risk of chronic diseases is possible. You might eat less fruits and vegetables because they only seem to taste bitter rather than producing the same great taste they used to have.</p>
<p>Some seniors eat a lot of sweets and food that contain a high volume of fat because they can taste them and tend to eat more than those without a sense of smell problem. These seniors may become overweight or obese and become even <strong>more susceptible to dangerous or deadly diseases</strong>.</p>
<p>Surprisingly, when you chew food, the flavor of it is recognized in the olfactory bulb that rests behind the bridge of the nose. Seniors who have gum disease or other problems with teeth and gums may not chew as heartily and much of the taste disappears because the flavor never reaches the olfactory bulb.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.healthandwellness.truebluetips.com/what-is-a-neti-pot.html" target="_blank">Sinus problems and blockages</a> of the nasal passages can also interfere with the olfactory bulb and your ability to perceive the taste of foods and your sense of smell. These disorders are often found among seniors and the results may damage certain receptors which can lead to diet problems and eventually, immunity problems.</p>

<p>Research has found that spices and herbs don’t help with the taste of foods when a person loses their sense of smell. There’s no way to restore olfaction, but you can balance the problem by choosing natural sweeteners, powerful herbs and spices and by taking vitamin and mineral supplements.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>One of the most important things you can do for your overall health is to keep your <strong>blood pressure</strong> (hypertension) under control. 140/90 should be the goal for a healthy person’s blood pressure reading, and lower if you have a medical condition such as diabetes or kidney disease. Changing your lifestyle is critical if you’ve been diagnosed with high blood pressure. If that doesn’t work, your health care provider can prescribe medication to keep it under control.</p>
<p>Among the lifestyle changes that you should make are changing to an appropriate diet plan and getting a moderate amount of exercise each day. Here are some specific lifestyle changes that you can make immediately to lower your blood pressure:</p>
<p><strong>Reduce Salt and Sodium</strong> – Sodium is a major factor that could significantly raise your blood pressure, and it’s virtually hidden in many of the foods we eat today, such as soups and frozen dinners. Be sure to read the labels of canned or frozen products you purchase and limit your sodium intake to 1500 mg per day.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.healthandwellness.truebluetips.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/high_blood2.jpg"><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-1072" title="Pressure Cuff" src="http://www.healthandwellness.truebluetips.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/high_blood2-150x150.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="150" /></a><strong>DASH </strong>(Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet – This diet was formulated specifically for people who suffer from high blood pressure and includes a diet of vegetables, fruits, low-fat dairy products and whole grains. You should also get plenty of potassium and reduce your intake of saturated fats.</p>
<p><strong>Smoking and Alcohol</strong> – Tobacco causes hardening of the arteries and alcohol may raise your blood pressure. If you smoke, consult your doctor about a plan to quit, and limit your alcohol intake to one or two drinks per day.</p>
<p><strong>Lose Weight</strong> – Even if you’re slightly overweight, losing unwanted pounds may help to lower your blood pressure.</p>
<p><strong>Stress </strong>– Too much stress in your life is a major concern if you have high blood pressure. <a href="http://www.healthandwellness.truebluetips.com/rebound-your-way-to-fitness.html" target="_blank">Exercise</a> sometimes help reduce stress as does relaxation and deep breathing techniques, so strive for at least a half hour of physical activity per day and get plenty of sleep.</p>
<p>Lifestyle changes can certainly help to keep your <strong>blood pressure</strong> under control, but it may not be enough. If your blood pressure remains higher than your doctor thinks it should be, he or she may prescribe a medication to control it.</p>
<p>Diuretics, or water pills, are among the medications that are usually prescribed for high blood pressure. They help your kidneys flush out the sodium and water in your system and reduce blood volume. Diuretics may also reduce your chances of having a stroke or heart failure – especially if you’re 80 or older.</p>

<p>A combination of drugs may be in order to more effectively reduce your <span style="text-decoration: underline;">blood pressure</span>, and after the high blood pressure is under control, your health care provider may suggest that you take an aspirin on a daily basis to lessen the risk of cardiovascular problems.</p>

The Fitbit accurately tracks your calories burned, water taken, steps taken, distance traveled and sleep quality. The Fitbit contains a 3D motion sensor like the one found in the Nintendo Wii. The Fitbit tracks your motion in three dimensions and converts this into useful information about your daily activities.</p>
<p>Similar to NASA technology that monitors astronauts in space, the device&#8217;s integrated accelerometer monitors the intensity and duration of movements, tracks steps taken and distance traveled, and calculates calories burned even during activities that do not require walking. The sensor fits into the included wristband while you sleep and tracks tiny tremors in the wrist to determine how long it took you to fall asleep, how often you woke up, and how long you were actually asleep, not just lying in bed. When the device is within 15&#8242; of the charging station, it automatically uploads information to the manufacturer&#8217;s website, where your readings are displayed on timelines and graphs. Includes Windows and Mac compatible software for uploading readings to the website. Operates for 10 days after a 1 1/2-hour charge. </p>
<p>You can wear the Fitbit on your waist, in your pocket or on undergarments. At night, you can wear the Fitbit clipped to the included wristband in order to track your sleep. Anytime you walk by the included wireless base station, data from your Fitbit is silently uploaded in the background to Fitbit website.</p>
<p>Multiple devices can coexist in the same household and can sync to the same base station or multiple base stations. In your house, at a minimum, you will only need to hook up one base station to a computer. Each Fitbit has a unique id, so that data will upload automatically to the proper person&#8217;s account.  This versatile wellness monitor sells for about $100US.</p>

<p>This is only a 1 minute 44 second long video, but it is brilliant.  Make sure you read as well as listen&#8230;forward and backward.</p>
<p>This is a video that was submitted in a contest by a 20 year old.  The contest was titled &#8220;u @ 50&#8243; by  AARP. This video won second place.  When they showed it, everyone in the room was awe-struck and broke into spontaneous applause.  </p>
<p>So simple and yet so brilliant.  Take a minute and watch it.</p>

<p>Pollution comes in the form of carbon monoxide which lowers the ability for our blood to carry oxygen in our bodies. And the result of all this pollution is our health suffers. Our water is not only polluted too but there is chlorine and other chemicals in the water we drink. We also eat too many processed foods which mean we are ingesting foods with little oxygen. This food is dead and lifeless unlike food that has been packaged by nature. Along with a lack of vitamins and minerals we are also depriving ourselves of the very life force we need; oxygen.</p>
<p>Taking medications like antibiotics may also contribute to the amount of beneficial oxygen we receive. Did you know that cancer cells thrive in low oxygen environments? <p>Here is a list of common foods you might want to start eating more regularly.</p>
<p><strong>Peanut Butter.</strong> Yes, peanut butter. The food we have loved since we were kids contains healthy fats and is associated with decreasing total cholesterol and lowering LDL and triglyceride levels. And the good news, it satisfies which means you don’t have to eat the whole jar!</p>
<p><strong>Cabbage.</strong> Did you know that Europeans and Asians eat more cabbage that we do in North America? Cabbage is low in calories and high in nutrition. It even contains some cancer fighting enzymes.</p>
<p><strong>Quinoa.</strong> This tiny grain which isn’t a grain, is actually related to spinach, beets and Swiss chard. It is full of good nutritional value with protein, minerals, vitamins and fiber.</p>
<p><strong>Spelt.</strong> This is a grain. If you are gluten intolerant this grain is for you. Spelt bread and cookies can be found in most bakeries.</p>
<p><strong>Walnuts.</strong> This is the king of the nut family. It has been used in Chinese medicine for hundreds of years. Did you know that eating walnuts after a meal containing bad fat will reduce the damaging effects of the meal?</p>
<p><a href="http://www.healthandwellness.truebluetips.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/avocadophoto.jpg"><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-1015" title="avocadophoto" src="http://www.healthandwellness.truebluetips.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/avocadophoto-150x150.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="150" /></a><strong>Avocado.</strong> My favorite. This little green fruit is high in cancer fighting antioxidants and phytonutrients that may also help the absorption of the nutrients from other foods sources.</p>
<p><strong>Mushrooms.</strong> Speaking of phytonutrients, mushrooms are loaded with antioxidants and are thought to boost the immune system, help ward off some cancers and are high in potassium.</p>
<p><strong>Tea.</strong> This beverage, which has been around for centuries, is healthier than coffee because it doesn’t contain as much caffeine. Tea is high in antioxidants, more so than coffee. Here’s a little bit of information: a study found that elderly women who drank tea had 2.8 percent more bone mineral density at the hip than non-tea drinkers.</p>
<p><strong>Cinnamon.</strong> Considered little more than a spice, cinnamon has been long prized and offers a host of benefits. People with type 2 diabetes who consumed one gram a day for six weeks, significantly reduced their blood sugar, triglycerides and LDL cholesterol.</p>
<p><strong>Natto.</strong> Never heard of it, right? Natto is fermented soybeans and is enjoyed in Japan. Nearly all soybeans offered in North American are non-fermented, but there are many healthy benefits to fermented soybeans including having antibiotic properties. It has been associated with reducing the risk of cancer, minimizing the risk of blood clotting, aids digestion, increases blood circulation, improves the immune system and bone density and lessons the risk of heart attacks. Natto can even help create better skin and reduce the chance of balding.</p>

Our water is not only polluted too but there is chlorine and other chemicals in the water we drink. We also eat too many processed foods which mean we are ingesting foods with little oxygen. This food is dead and lifeless unlike food that has been packaged by nature. Along with a lack of vitamins and minerals we are also depriving ourselves of the very life force we need; <strong>oxygen</strong>.</p>
