p12Does your house increase greenhouse gas emissions or reduce them? You can reduce greenhouse emissions with energy-efficient products including appliances, computers, lighting and electronics. In Canada, Natural Resources Canada has the EnerGuide which is an appliance label program that allows consumers to compare their appliances energy consumption. Check to see if there is such a guide in your country.

If you are interested in living greener, then try following these alternatives:

  • Change incandescent lights with the compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) or light-emitting diodes (LEDs).  CFLs use 75% less energy and last 10 times longer while LEDs are 90% more efficient;
  • Windows and doors are often drafty so look at replacing them with energy-efficient windows and doors;
  • Does your furnace need to be replaced?  If so, check out a model with an annual fuel utilization efficiency rating of 90% or more;
  • Replacing your kitchen tap with a low-flow one can save up to 50% of the water flow.  If you wash your pots and pans by hand, try soaking them for a bit so you don’t use as much water to clean them.  Look for an energy reducing dishwashers that save water and energy;
  • You can reduce water in the bathroom with low-flush toilets and replace your shower head with a low-flow faucet.  Choose to shower instead of bathing and don’t leave the water running when you are brushing your teeth;
  • Laundry uses a lot of water.  You can save on the energy and water used by buying more efficient and newer models.  Switch to cold water and cold water detergents and only use the washer when you have a full load;
  • If possible add a solar panel to your house to run things like garden lights;
  • You can keep the air in your home cleaner and greener by using plants.  The spider plant, peace lily, golden pathos and bamboo palm are especially efficient for cleaning the air.
