Happiness is an Emotion

Do you define happiness as getting things: a great job, money, a house or condo, all those material things. Do you think you will be happy having things? They make you feel great in the short term but will things give you true happiness and satisfaction?

A doctor at the University of Pennsylvania has found that there are three essentials to happiness. These essentials come from positive emotions that include pleasure, engagement and meaning. This means giving and getting pleasure, getting involved in engaging activities and participating in meaningful activities.

The research shows that people who have a positive outlook on life are healthier and more successful and seem to be more socially engaged. Happy people are more likely to experience greater self-control and coping abilities, have a healthier immune system and live longer. Also, they tend to have more successful marriages and other relationships as well as more creativity, productivity and income.

Researchers also found that activities like exercising and being kind to others are also associated with well-being. You can base your happiness level on how well you reframe situations in a more positive light or pausing to remember your blessings.

There seems to be a strong correlations between expressing happiness such as smiling or acting happy. Studies have shown that expressing happiness intensifies the emotions. Kind of like “fake it until you make it”. So remember, if you want to be happy, act happy!
